Tembo Safari Lodge Queen Elizabeth National Park

Tembo Safari Lodge, named after the Swahili word for elephant, sits in the Mweya Peninsula area of Queen Elizabeth National Park, one of Uganda’s most wildlife-rich environments. The lodge offers mid-range accommodation with excellent access to the Kazinga Channel, the Kasenyi game-drive circuit, and the broader highlights of the park. With a reputation for attentive service and a location that places guests at the geographic heart of Queen Elizabeth, Tembo Safari Lodge is a solid choice for safari visitors seeking comfort without the premium prices of the peninsula’s luxury options.

Location & Setting

Tembo Safari Lodge enjoys a strategic position near the Mweya Peninsula, within easy reach of the Kazinga Channel’s northern shore. The peninsula area is celebrated for its dense wildlife populations, and elephants — the lodge’s totemic animal — are commonly seen moving through the surrounding bush. The landscape here is characterized by low scrub, scattered euphorbias, and open ground that slopes gently toward the channel. The air carries the scent of sun-warmed grass and the distant bellowing of hippos. Views extend across the channel to the foothills of the Democratic Republic of Congo, adding a sense of wild remoteness to the setting.

Accommodation

The lodge provides a selection of rooms and safari tents designed for comfort in the equatorial climate. Standard rooms feature solid walls, tiled en-suite bathrooms, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, and windows positioned for natural ventilation and views. Safari tents offer a more immersive bush experience, with canvas walls, en-suite facilities, and wooden decks overlooking the surrounding vegetation. All units include bedside lighting and power outlets for charging devices. The lodge’s layout ensures that each room enjoys a degree of privacy while remaining close to the central dining and social areas.

Dining & Facilities

Meals at Tembo Safari Lodge are prepared in a central kitchen and served in an open-sided dining hall. The menu rotates daily and features a combination of Ugandan dishes — groundnut stew, cassava, fresh vegetables — and familiar international fare such as pasta, grilled chicken, and salads. Breakfast includes fruit, eggs, toast, and Ugandan coffee or tea. The bar is well stocked and opens onto a social area with comfortable seating. A campfire pit is the gathering point each evening, where guests compare notes on the day’s sightings over drinks.

Activities & Experiences

Tembo Safari Lodge provides convenient access to the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, one of the most popular activities in the entire East African safari circuit. The cruise departs from the nearby Mweya jetty and offers unmatched close-range wildlife photography. Morning and afternoon game drives in Queen Elizabeth National Park explore the Kasenyi Plains and the Queen’s Mile, where lion prides, leopards, elephant herds, and large troops of baboons are regularly encountered. The lodge also facilitates visits to the Ishasha sector to see the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, and arranges cultural village visits in the surrounding communities.
