Kyambura Gorge Lodge Queen Elizabeth National Park

Kyambura Gorge Lodge is one of the most distinctive luxury properties in Uganda, a beautifully restored 1950s colonial building set on the rim of the Kyambura Gorge, a dramatic underground forest carved deep into the savannah floor of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The lodge combines high-end accommodation with a commitment to community development and sustainability, and its position directly above the gorge — home to a habituated community of chimpanzees — makes it the definitive base for primate-focused safaris in the Queen Elizabeth area.

Location & Setting

The lodge perches on the very edge of the Kyambura Gorge, a steep-sided valley that drops away from the flat savannah into a tangle of tropical riverine forest below. The gorge, sometimes called the Valley of Apes, shelters chimpanzees, red-tailed monkeys, and an array of forest birds. From the lodge terrace, guests gaze across the gorge to the open plains beyond, where elephants and buffalo roam, and the distant cone of a crater lake catches the afternoon light. The surrounding terrain is dotted with fig trees and euphorbia, and the juxtaposition of lush gorge forest against golden grassland is visually stunning. This is one of the most photographed settings of any lodge in East Africa.

Accommodation

Kyambura Gorge Lodge offers eight beautifully appointed bandas, each individually decorated with handcrafted furnishings made by local artisans. Rooms feature large beds with premium linens, en-suite bathrooms with rainfall showers, writing desks, and expansive windows framing the gorge landscape. Verandas with comfortable chairs invite long hours of contemplation. The lodge’s renovation preserved the original 1950s architecture while adding modern comforts, resulting in a property that feels both historic and contemporary. Every detail — from the hand-carved door handles to the locally woven rugs — reflects the lodge’s philosophy of supporting the surrounding community through craft and employment.

Dining & Facilities

Dining at Kyambura Gorge Lodge is a curated experience, with multi-course meals prepared by a talented kitchen team using produce sourced from community gardens and local farms. Menus change daily and incorporate both Ugandan and international flavors, with dishes like pan-seared tilapia, slow-braised goat, and fresh mango sorbet. The wine list features a thoughtful selection of South African labels. The lodge bar opens onto the terrace overlooking the gorge, and sundowner drinks here are unforgettable. Other amenities include a swimming pool, a community-run craft shop, and a library. Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Activities & Experiences

The lodge is the premier base for chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge, with treks departing from the gorge rim directly below the property. This experience, guided by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, takes visitors into the forest canopy to observe chimpanzees feeding, socializing, and resting. Beyond primates, the lodge arranges the Kazinga Channel boat cruise, birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park expeditions, and game drives to all sectors of the park. Community walks, coffee farm visits, and cultural performances are integrated into the activity program. A full overview of tourist attractions in the park is available to help guests plan. The best time to visit Uganda for safaris is during the dry seasons, though chimpanzee trekking is available year-round.

Getting There

Kyambura Gorge Lodge is located on the eastern edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park, reached by road from Kampala in approximately six hours via Mbarara. Alternatively, scheduled and charter flights serve Kasese airstrip, from which lodge transfers take about one hour. The approach road passes through the scenic crater lakes region, making the journey itself part of the experience.
