Bullbush River Camp Queen Elizabeth National Park

Bullbush River Camp occupies a beautiful riverside setting in the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where the Ishasha River flows through a corridor of lush woodland frequented by tree-climbing lions, elephants, and a wealth of other wildlife. The camp draws its name from the dense bush along the riverbanks, where Cape buffalo wallow in the shallows and hippos hold territory in the deeper pools. This is safari at its most elemental — a tented camp in genuine wilderness, with the sounds of the African bush as the only soundtrack and the stars as the only ceiling light.

Location & Setting

The camp is set along the banks of the Ishasha River in the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The Ishasha area is one of the most remote and least visited parts of the park, ensuring a sense of genuine seclusion. The river attracts a constant stream of wildlife: elephants come to drink, buffalo herds cool themselves in the water, hippos grunt from their midstream territories, and crocodiles bask on the sandy banks. The surrounding woodland is dominated by massive fig trees, the very trees in which the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha rest during the heat of the day. The camp’s position on the river provides front-row access to this remarkable ecosystem.

Accommodation

Bullbush River Camp offers tented accommodation arranged along the riverbank, with each tent facing the water for maximum wildlife viewing potential. Tents are spacious, with comfortable beds, mosquito nets, en-suite bush bathrooms with bucket showers and eco-friendly flush toilets, and small verandas with camp chairs. The camp embraces the tented safari tradition, combining canvas shelters with just enough comfort to ensure a good night’s rest after a day of game viewing. The camp is small, usually accommodating no more than sixteen guests, which keeps the experience intimate and personal.

Dining & Facilities

Meals at Bullbush River Camp are served in a central mess tent or around the campfire, depending on the occasion. The camp chef works with locally sourced ingredients to produce satisfying bush cuisine — grilled meats, fresh salads, hearty stews, and homemade bread. Breakfast features eggs, fruit, toast, and strong coffee. A bush bar stocks essential beverages, and sundowner sessions on the riverbank are a highlight of the camp schedule. Facilities are deliberately simple to maintain the bush atmosphere: solar-powered lighting, limited charging options, and no Wi-Fi. The result is a digital detox that most guests end up cherishing.

Activities & Experiences

Bullbush River Camp specializes in guided game drives to see the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha, with experienced rangers who track the prides to their favored fig trees with remarkable consistency. Beyond the lions, the Ishasha sector offers outstanding general game viewing and birding in Queen Elizabeth National Park, with species such as martial eagle, Ross’s turaco, and African broadbill present in the riverine forest. The Kazinga Channel boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel can be included as part of a multi-day itinerary, typically combined with a drive through the park’s central sector. A comprehensive list of tourist attractions in the park helps visitors plan their time, and experienced recommended safari companies can design itineraries that combine Ishasha with other highlights of western Uganda.

Getting There

Bullbush River Camp is located in the Ishasha sector at the southern end of Queen Elizabeth National Park.
